WHAT IS THE U.S. DOING TO SUPPORT THE CA ELECTIONS?

The United States is committed to providing logistical, operational, and financial support to the Government of Nepal, including the Election Commission and the security forces, the political parties, domestic observers and the media to help ensure a free and fair Constituent Assembly election.

The United States is providing or has provided:

Help with the ballots

  • printing machines to print the ballots and training on their use;
  • paper for the ballots;
  • technical assistance on ballot design;

Help with voter education

  • assistance to the Election Commission (EC) website;
  • street drama on the election in all regions and districts through local theater member groups (1,470 performances by April 10);
  • printing of individualized voter invitations (to be issued by the EC)
  • preparation of public service announcements for radio and TV;

Help to the security forces

  • election technical assistance and training for NP and APF;

Help to the Election Commission

  • providing equipment and rehabilitating infrastructure for the EC’s Joint Election Operations Center;
  • connecting the EC and the security forces through the construction of a fully automated communication network;
  • training and expert advice to the EC leadership and staff;

Help to political parties

  • training for political party polling agents;

Help to domestic observers

  • training and material support for an alliance of domestic election observers;

Help to the media

  • arranged a media survey in collaboration with BBC/World Service Trust to determine the latest trends in media knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Nepal that affect election coverage;
  • material support for a EC media and results center;
  • material support for media monitoring.
