Embassy Speaker Encouraged Students to Become “Civic Minded”

April 23 , 2009

As part of Public Affairs Kathmandu’s ongoing Embassy Speaker Program, the Deputy Consular Section Chief Michael Mussi addressed a group of approximately 65 students (25 girls) between 14 and16 years of age at a high school in the capital Kathmandu.  Most of his presentation was in Nepali.  He talked about unique aspects of the U.S. education system, the importance of civic education, civic education in America, and he encouraged students to become engaged participants in civil society.  He also encouraged the students to read more books and invited them to visit the American Library with its circulating collection.  Many in  the under-funded government school had never heard of the American Library due to few outside resources and contacts.  The students asked the speaker about the U.S. educational system and how they might be able to study in the United States with scholarships.

"This presentation is an eye-opener for my students.  This is a real firsthand knowledge for my students. We would like to organize such talk programs again."
