American A Capella Singing Group Wows Nepali Audiences

July 4, 2009

The Yale University Whiffenpoofs, the world's oldest and most renowned modern collegiate a capella singing group, brought down the house during their Kathmandu performance.  The group performed in front of the Nepali and foreign communities, including Ambassador Nancy J. Powell of the U.S. Embassy, at Gokarna Forest Resort, a hotel and recreation complex just outside Kathmandu, for the Independence Day celebration.  The group sang sixteen songs in total, captivating the audience with their vocal range and charismatic performances.  In between songs, a member of the fourteen man group, explained, “In a cappella, all the songs are performed by mouth only; no instruments are used.  It is similar to a chapel choir, except it does not include pianos or any other musical instruments.”  Different members provided the bass, the tenor, and the falsetto, to give a rich combined sound that is very unique.
