Embassy Speaker Informs Nepali Youth about American Life and Diversity

September 10, 2009

As part of Public Affairs Kathmandu's ongoing Embassy Speakers Program, USAID Executive Officer Timothy Bertotti addressed more than 160 students (70 girls) and their teachers. In particular, he discussed diversity, social and economic inclusion, and efforts made by American leaders and activists to promote diversity. The students were surprised to learn that enrollment of girls in public schools is equal to that of boys and that schooling is mandatory in the United States.

Mr. Bertotti also spoke about African-American history and the inclusion of minority groups in a democracy. The event took place at Hermann Gmriner SOS School, a school for orphans in Bhaktapur, the third largest city in the Kathmandu Valley.
