Embassy Commemorates 9/11 attacks

September 11, 2009

Public Affairs Kathmandu coordinated with Sathikhel Women’s Group, a voluntary civic action group at Sathhikel-Pharping in the southern outskirts of Kathmandu district, to commemorate the victims of the 9/11/01 terror attacks.  Counselor for Public Affairs Terry White, joined by some two dozen members of the group and 100 more from the local community, laid a wreath at the Peace Grove in memory of the victims.  In his remarks, White noted, “Nepal and Nepalis have also endured violence and terrorism.  Those who grieve over their nation’s current troubles might take comfort in remembering that beauty and life can come out of the darkest moments of history."  The Peace Grove, maintained by the Satikhel Women’s Group (in recent years with PAS funding support), was inaugurated in 2002 as a Public Affairs initiative with USAID funding.  Each year, the women’s group has conducted a memorial service for victims of terrorism.
