Emergency Information
Finding a Friend or Relative in Nepal
If you need emergency assistance locating a friend or relative who is in Nepal, you can contact the consular section directly at 400-7200, or you can contact the Department of State's Office of American Citizens Services at 202/647-5225.
The consular section will do everything it can to help locate your missing friend or relative and to pass along any message you request. It is extremely helpful if you can provide information such as the person's last known address and phone number, his or her itinerary, the date of last contact, names and numbers of friends or associates in Nepal, and reason for travel to Nepal.
Because Nepal is a mountainous country with poor infrastructure, it can sometimes be very difficult for Americans to communicate from outlying districts or on trekking routes. Often, when a traveler has not checked in with family for a few days, the reason is simply that phone lines were not working, or radio signals were blocked by bad weather.
There are limits on the actions a consular officer can take when we find your friend or relative. For further information, please see the Welfare and Whereabouts page of the Department of State web site.
