Helicopter Rescues

If you need consular assistance in arranging a helicopter rescue, call the U.S. Embassy at 400-7200 (after hours 400-7266). The receptionist or Marine guard will connect you to a consular officer or duty officer.

Mountainous terrain and lack of infrastructure in remote areas of the country make helicopter rescues vital for ensuring the health and safety of trekkers, tourists and residents in Nepal. If you are injured or become seriously ill while in a remote location, the Embassy can arrange for a helicopter to pick you up and return you to Kathmandu as quickly as possible.

Rescues typically cost $3,000 - $10,000. You will be responsible for the full cost of the rescue. The Consular Section recommends that all Americans travelling through remote areas of Nepal verify that their insurance will cover a helicopter evacuation.
