Below is a list of hospitals, clinics, physicians, and other health care practitioners who offer medical services to travelers in Nepal.  The American Embassy in Kathmandu assumes no responsibility for the professional ability or reputation of the medical facilities or persons whose names appear on the following list.  Inclusion on this list is in no way an endorsement by the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy.  Names are listed alphabetically, and the order in which they appear has no other significance.  This list is maintained on the basis of information provided by the concerned medical facilities and the persons.

Clinics and Medical Aid Posts

Ciwec Clinic

Located in Lazimpat, near British Embassy and Indian Embasy.  Open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., by appointment.  Clinic generally closed for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. After hours doctor on call.  Three physicians including an American Doctor and foreign nurses staff this clinic.  Provides medical care in Western setting. Dental services available by calling 444-0100.  Laboratory facilities, ambulance service, vaccinations, and medications
available on site.  Accepts Visa and Mastercard.

Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA)

Founded in 1973 to reduce deaths among trekkers.  Office in Lazimpat, near King's palace northern gate.  Trekkers given free advice on altitude sickness, equipment, conditions of trekking routes.  HRA also operates aid posts in Pheriche and Manang to assist trekkers.  Posts staffed by expatriate physicians during peak seasons (March-May, October-November).

Nepal International Clinic (NIC)

Located on small street between Royal Palace main gate and Jaya Nepal Cinema, within easy walking distance  of Thamel.  Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday through Saturday; appointments encouraged.  No need for appointment for vaccination on Saturday.  Dr. Buddha Basnyat, a U.S. board-certified Nepalese physician with M.S. in respiratory physiology from Calgary, Canada, provides medical care in Western setting.  Laboratory facilities, vaccinations, and medications available on site. 24-hour telephone answering service for emergency physician contact.  Accepts cash, cheques, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Patan Private Clinic

Associated with Patan Hospital.  Located in Lagankhel, Patan, this clinic opened in 2002. Several specialists and general practitioners see patients during office hours. Contact clinic for current schedule, or see the specialists list at the end of this document.  Specialties include Ob/gyn, surgery, pediatrics, dermatology, internal medicine and orthopedics.  Some expatriate medical personnel among doctors providing care.

Dent Inn - The Dental Clinic

Located in Heritage Plaza, Kamaladi (down the first right turn on the way to Kamaladi from King Mahendra's statue at King's Way). Open Sunday to Friday, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, Generally closed for lunch from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. Visits by appointments are encouraged. Provides international standard dental care in a western setting with high level of sterilization and customer service. Dental care provided by a team of dentists including specialists for orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and oral surgery. Accepts Visa, Mastercard and local debit cards.

Also known as HAMS. Located in Buddha Nagar, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu.  Offers outpatient diagnostic services Sunday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and outpatient services from 8:00am - 8:00pm. 24-hr emergency and ambulance services, ICU, CCU, NICU, inpatient (gastroenteritis and general services) and surgical facilities.

Located in Thapathali, Kathmandu.  Specializes in cardio and neuro care, also handles general medical cases. 24-hour emergency and ambulatory services available. Hospital has CCU and ICU.  Out-patient diagnostic services 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sundays through Fridays. Doctors on call.  Staff includes veteran neurosurgeon and consultant cardiologist.

Provides basic health care in the Khumbu area. Supported by the Hillary Trust.  Has expatriate physician and nurse.

Private hospital in Phulbari, Pokhara with medical and comprehensive radiology services and 24-hour emergency room.  Provides medical services to travelers in Pokhara and Annapurna area.  Associated with Manipal hospital group in India.  No interventional cardiology available at this location.

Located in Banepa, on the road to Dhulikhel, in Kathmandu Valley.  Emergency care, surgery, and inpatient treatment. Hospital supported by Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Several expatriate medical personnel on staff.

Located in Dandeldhura in Far Western Nepal.  Primarily supports Nepali residents.  Some expatriate medical personnel on staff.  Supported by a missionary group.

United Mission To Nepal Hospital

Located in Tansen, Palpa District.  Provides medical services to the region south of Pokhara and travelers on the road to Bhairahawa.  Surgical and medical wards, laboratory, pharmacy and blood bank.  Some expatriate medical personnel on staff.

Western Regional Hospital

Pokhara's largest medical facility.  Basic emergency room and inpatient facilities.  The Inter Nepal Fellowship (INF) supports this facility.  Some expatriate medical personnel on staff.
