Medical Information

Tourists come to Nepal to engage in some of the most exciting-- and potentially dangerous-- adventures in the world. Mountain climbing, trekking, whitewater rafting and many of the other outdoor activities for which Nepal is famous can cause altitude sickness or present health and safety problems that may be hard to address in remote locations. More commonly, gastrointestinal ailments such as diarrhea affect tourists and residents alike, and more than one American citizen has had to make a visit to a clinic or hospital part of his or her vacation.

The consular section keeps a list of medical professionals who have experience with American citizens and provides general guidance about health and safety for American citizens in Nepal, including information about helicopter rescues from remote trekking locations and medical evacuations in the case of severe injury or illness.

Much of the general information on this page is condensed from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web site. It should not be considered comprehensive medical advice. If you are ill or seeking medical guidance, please contact a medical professional.
