CLINICS AND AID POSTS

CIWEC CLINIC (Telephone: 4241732, 4228531)
Located just off Durbar Marg on the road to the Yak and Yeti Hotel. It is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., by appointment. The Clinic is generally closed for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. After hours a doctor is on call. This clinic is staffed by three physicians (currently two of the physicians are American) and a number of foreign nurses; it provides medical care in a Western setting. Laboratory facilities, vaccinations and medications are available on site. Accepts Visa and Master Card.

KALIMATI CLINIC (Telephone: 4271873)
Located in Kalimati near the turn off for the Soaltee Oberoi Hotel. This clinic is not primarily a diagnostic clinic for travelers; it does, however, offer gamma globulin and post exposure rabies vaccinations among other services. All immunizations are given with disposable needles. It is open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, except on Wednesdays when the hours are from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The clinic was established by volunteers from the expatriate community to provide medical treatment for their employees. It is supported in part by AWON (Active Women of Nepal).

NEPAL INTERNATIONAL CLINIC (Telephone: 4434642, 4435357)
Located on a small street between the main gate to the Royal Palace and the Jaya Nepal Cinema, within easy walking distance of Thamel. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday through Saturday; appointments are encouraged. Dr. Buddha Basnyat, a U.S. board certified Nepalese physician with an M.S. in respiratory physiology from Calgary, Canada, provides medical care in a Western setting. Laboratory facilities, vaccines and medications are available on site. A 24-hour telephone answering service for emergency contact with the physician is available. Accepts Visa, Master Card and American Express.

PATAN PRIVATE CLINIC (Telephone: 5522278, 5522266)
Associated with Patan Hospital. Located in Lagankhel, Patan, this clinic opened on January 1, 2002. Several specialists and general practitioners see patients during specific office hours. Contact the clinic for current schedules, or see the specialists list at the end of this document. Specialties include Ob/Gyn, Surgery, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Internal Medicine and Orthopedics. Some expatriate medical personnel are among the doctors providing care.

HIMALAYAN RESCUE ASSOCIATION (HRA) (Telephone: 4440292, 4440293.)
Founded in 1973 with the aim of reducing deaths among trekkers in the mountains of Nepal, HRA has an office in Lazimpat, near the northern gate of the King’s palace. Trekkers are given free advice on altitude sickness, equipment, conditions of trekking routes, etc.

The HRA also operates aid posts in Pheriche and Manang to assist trekkers. The posts are staffed by expatriate physicians during the peak trekking periods of early March to mid May and early October to mid November.

B & B HOSPITAL (Telephone: 5533206, 5535739)
Located at Gwarko, Satdobato (Ring Road), it is a new private hospital with orthopedic and general surgeons.

PATAN HOSPITAL (Telephone: 5522266, 5522278, 5522295)
Located in Lagankhel, Patan. Services include an intensive care unit, inpatient and surgical facilities, and a 24 hour emergency room. It is supported in part by the United Mission to Nepal and has some expatriate medical personnel on staff.

TRIBHUVAN UNIV. TEACHING HOSPITAL (Telephone: 4412303, 4412404, 4412505)
Located in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. Services include an intensive care unit, inpatient and surgical facilities, and a 24 hour emergency room.

NORVIC HOSPITAL (Telephone: 4258554, 9810-23390)
Located in Thapathali, Kathmandu. NORVIC specializes in Cardio and Neuro care, but also handles other general medical cases. Emergency and ambulance services are available on a 24-hour basis, and the hospital has a CCU and ICU. Out-patient diagnostic services are from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sundays through Fridays, and doctors are available on call. The staff includes a veteran neurosurgeon and consultant cardiologist.

HOSPITAL FOR ADVANCED MEDICINE AND SURGERY (HAMS)
(Telephone: 4261399, 4254840, 4254983)
Also known as HAMS. Located in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, this hospital offers outpatient diagnostic services Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 noon, and 4:00pm - 12:00 midnight. Facilities include 24-hr emergency and ambulance services, ICU, CCU, NICU, inpatient (gastroenteritis and general services) and surgical facilities. Can be reached by e-mail at hams@wlink.com.np

A government hospital located in Mahaboudha opposite the Military parade ground.


HOSPITALS OUTSIDE KATHMANDU

SHEER MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (Telephone: 011- 661111, 661112)
Located in Banepa, on the road to Dhulikhel in the Kathmandu valley. Services include emergency care, surgery, and inpatient treatment. The hospital is supported by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and has several expatriate medical personnel on staff.

WESTERN REGIONAL HOSPITAL (Telephone: 061-520461, 529066)
The major medical facility in Pokhara. Services include basic emergency room and inpatient facilities. The Inter Nepal Fellowship (INF) supports this facility, and there are some expatriate medical personnel on staff.

UNITED MISSION TO NEPAL HOSPITAL (Telephone: 075-520489, 520041, 520111)
Located in Tansen, Palpa District. Provides medical services to the region south of Pokhara and travelers on the road to Bhairahawa. In addition to surgical and medical wards, the hospital has a laboratory, pharmacy, and a blood bank. It has some expatriate medical personnel on staff.

TEAM HOSPITAL (Telephone: 096-420188, 420161)
Located in Dandeldhura in Far Western Nepal, and primarily supports Nepali residents in the area. The hospital has some expatriate medical personnel on staff and is supported by a missionary group.

KUNDE HOSPITAL (Telephone: 038-640053, 640013)
Provides basic health care in the Khumbu area. It is assisted by the Hillary Trust and has an expatriate physician and nurse.
