Passports

The consular section accepts applications for U.S. Passports at any time during American Citizen Services (ACS) business hours, without appointment. Adjudication of citizenship claims and renunciation of citizenship requires an appointment, due to the length of time involved in these procedures. For instructions on documenting the birth in Nepal of a U.S. citizen child and obtaining his or her first passport, please see the Consular Reports of Birth Abroad page.

Applying for a Passport

All passport applications filed at the Embassy are now sent to a central processing center in the United States. Americans overseas are issued the same photo-digitized passports as applicants in the U.S., instead of a locally produced, less-secure version. Passport processing takes approximately two weeks; applicants may retain their current passports while awaiting the replacement. Limited validity passports may be issued locally in emergency circumstances, but must be replaced as soon as possible by a photo-digitized passport. They may not be extended.

To apply...

  • If you are an adult renewing your ten-year passport, bring it to the consular section to submit with Form DS-82. No other identification or proof of citizenship is needed.
  • If you are reapplying for a U.S. passport (name change, data correction, limited passport replacement) within a year, bring it to the consular section with Form DS-5504. You will get a ten year photo digitized replacement passport from the United States.
  • If you are a parent renewing a passport for your child under the age of Sixteen, regulations to protect children from parental abduction apply to your case. Passport applications in this category require the signatures of both of the child's parents. The child's birth certificate or CRBA is also necessary in order to document the parent-child relationship.
  • Come to the consular section with your child, bringing his or her passport and birth certificate, along with Form DS-11. The application must be signed in front of a consular officer. If only one parent is present at the time of application a signed notarized statement, or a completed Form DS-3053  from the other parent is required, indicating that he or she is aware of the application and consents to the issuance of a passport. (Note: If your child's passport was issued for less than five years, and his or her birth certificate is not from the United States, you will need to bring proof of citizenship as described below.)

The consular section recognizes that there may be circumstances, such as the death of one parent, which make fulfillment of these requirements impossible. Please call ahead if you have any questions or concerns about your ability to meet these requirements.

  • If you are over the age of sixteen and applying for your first ten-year passport, bring your previous passport (if any) to the consular section, along with Form DS-11. You will need to provide proof of citizenship and identity.
  • If you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, you will need to provide proof of citizenship and identity as described below, as well as Form DS-11 and an Affidavit Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport (available from the consular section). A police report will be required if the passport was stolen. If you are traveling in the near future, the Consular Section may issue a limited, locally produced passport, which you must replace as soon as possible with a photo-digitized passport. Nepali authorities will require you to replace your Nepali visa before you will be able to leave the Kingdom.

All application forms are also available at the consular section.

When your new passport is received from the United States, the consular section will contact you and ask you to pick it up. Your prior passport must be cancelled when the new one is issued, but the consular section will return the cancelled passport to you.
