U.S. Mission Closed for New Year (December 30, 2011)
The U.S. Mission to Nepal will be closed on Monday, January 2, 2012 in observance of the New Year. It will reopen during normal business hours on Tuesday, January 3.

Nepal selected for Millennium Challenge Corporation program (December 16, 2011)
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in Washington, D.C., yesterday announced that Nepal has been selected as eligible to develop a Threshold Program. In making its decision, the MCC board cited the recent landmark agreements on the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues Arrives in Nepal (December 7, 2011)
Ronan Farrow, the Secretary of State’s Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues, arrived in Nepal today for a four-day visit. Mr. Farrow will meet with youth activists, students, politicians, and media representatives.

U.S. Department of State Cancels Travel Warning for Nepal (December 7, 2011)
In recognition of improved conditions in Nepal, the U.S. Department of State has cancelled the Travel Warning that was most recently issued on January 12, 2011. The U.S. Embassy is pleased that the overall situation in Nepal has improved to such a degree that this decision could be made.

U.S. Government Global Health Initiative Executive Director, Ms. Lois Quam Visits Nepal (November 29, 2011)
The Executive Director of President Obama’s Global Health Initiative (GHI), Ms. Lois Quam, arrived in Kathmandu today for a three-day visit.

USAID Launches New HIV/AIDS Program for Nepal in Honor of World AIDS Day (November 28, 2011)
Kathmandu: The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announces the launch of its new five-year health program “Saath-Saath” to reduce the transmission and impact of HIV/AIDS and improve reproductive health among selected most-at-risk populations (MARPs). The program will integrate and expand HIV prevention, treatment, and care and family planning services in 33 districts of Nepal.

U.S. Department of State Welcomes Agreement on Comprehensive Peace Accord (November 2, 2011)
We welcome today’s landmark agreements by Nepalese political parties on implementing the Comprehensive Peace Accord, including the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants, the agreement to complete drafting the Constitution by the November 30 deadline, and agreements on other important outstanding issues.

U.S. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner Visits Nepal (October 18, 2011)
U.S. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner arrived in Kathmandu today for a two-day visit. During his visit, he will meet with senior government officials, parliamentarians, and Tibetan civil society leaders to discuss a range of issues, including U.S.-Nepal relations and the protection of Tibetan refugees in Nepal.

Press Event to mark the adoption of the Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Act 2011 (October 16, 2011)
The U.S. Embassy to Nepal, the United Nations Human Rights Office in Nepal (OHCHR), and a coalition of Dalit organizations would like to invite members of the media to a special event to raise awareness on the recently enacted Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability Act of 2011.

Chaugara Sattal at Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur to be restored through U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation Grant (October 12, 2011)
The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the Living Traditions Museum is this year’s recipient of funding from the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). With a grant totaling $95,800 USD, (around Nepali Rupees 71 Lakh) this project will support restoration of the deteriorating historic buildings that surround the ancient Changu Narayan temple complex in Bhaktapur district, one of seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley.

U.S. Embassy closed for Dashain, Columbus Day (September 30, 2011)
The U.S. Embassy to Nepal will be closed October 3-7 in observance of the Dashain festivals. It will also be closed Monday October 10 in observance of Columbus Day, an American holiday celebrating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World. Since 1971, the second Monday of October has been proclaimed a national holiday.

U.S. Congressman Steve Chabot arrives in Kathmandu today for a two-day visit. During his visit, he will meet with Prime Minister Bhattarai and senior government officials, political party leaders, media representatives, and civil society leaders to address a range of issues, including the peace process.

U.S. – Nepal Army conducting Nepal Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (September 19, 2011)
The Armies of Nepal and the United States are co-hosting the Nepal Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (DREE) September 18-21 at the Nepal Army Club. The DREE is a comprehensive effort focusing on building multilateral interoperability in disaster response between the United States and Nepal and identifying areas to increase preparation and risk mitigation.

U.S. Embassy closed for Labor Day
The U.S. Mission to Nepal will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2011 in observance of Labor Day, a national holiday in the U.S. The first Monday of September, observed as the Labor Day, is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It will reopen during normal business hours Tuesday, September 6.

Statement on the Maoist Decision to Hand Over the Keys to Arms Containers (September 1, 2011)
We welcome the decision by the Maoist party to hand over the keys to the arms containers to the Special Committee today. This is a promising step and we hope it signals the commitment of the UCPN-M to continue moving forward to complete the peace process. Doing so, however, will require that the UML, the Nepali Congress, and all other political actors respond with similar flexibility and constructive commitment to finally bring the Nepali people the peace and prosperity they seek and deserve.

Commemorating the Completion and Successes of USAID’s Nepal Transition Initiative (NTI) Program (July 19,2011)
KATHMANDU – The U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the completion of its Nepal Transition Initiative (NTI) program. Designed to provide innovative support for Nepal’s peace process and assist the country in its post-conflict transition, the program since August 2006 helped to support the political situation as it evolved by increasing the public’s access to information, by facilitating public debate on issues critical to the political transition, and by increasing local-level participation in the peace process.

The U.S. Mission to Nepal will be closed on Monday, July 4, for the Independence Day of the United States of America. Independence Day, a national holiday in the U.S., honors the birthday of the United States of America and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The mission will reopen during normal business hours Tuesday, July 5.
