U.S. Embassy Statement – CA Election Date

January 11, 2008

We congratulate the government, the parties, and the people of Nepal on establishing a firm date for the Constituent Assembly. The United States is prepared to offer assistance to allow all Nepalis to participate in the democratic process. We urge all parties to develop and adhere to a Code of Conduct that will assure peaceful participation in the Constituent Assembly elections by all Nepalis.

Elections for a Constituent Assembly are one critical component of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). We encourage the interim government to implement all components of the CPA as election preparations proceed.
