The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu and the United States Office for Patent and Trademark Protection's Global Intellectual Property Academy hosted an "Intellectual Property Awareness Day" in Kathmandu on May 16, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The event featured participants from the Government of Nepal, Nepal's Judiciary and representatives from Nepal's legal, IT, agricultural, pharmaceutical, television, advertising, music and film industries. Mr. Dominic Keating, United States Intellectual Property Attaché, was in Kathmandu to chair the event. In opening comments, U.S. Charge d’Affaires Randy Berry described how "clear rules and strong enforcement of IPR allows countries around the world to sustain economic development."

This seminar is part of the U.S. Embassy’s efforts in partnership with the private sector in Nepal to create awareness about intellectual property (IP) and its growing economic importance. The aim is to increase understanding of how protecting IP rights helps promote creativity and innovation, encourages respect for IP rights of others and is a valuable economic tool, essential for economic growth in today's global economy.
