U.S. Professor to Discuss Democracy, Political Parties During Crisis

The U.S. Embassy and Ganesh Man Singh Academy invite media to a presentation on "Strengthening Democracy: The Positive Role of Political Parties in a Crisis Environment" on Thursday, September 1, at Hotel Shanker in Kathmandu.

The presentation will be made by U.S. scholar and political party expert Professor Edward McMahon.  He has been visiting in Nepal for one week at the behest of the U.S. Embassy to discuss with politicians at all levels the positive role that parties can play in crisis situations.  Professor McMahon has been reviewing the various aspects of political leadership, strategic planning, and coalition building in a series of workshops in Kathmandu and Biratnagar.  Participants have explored issues such as transparency in policy-making and leadership structures, long-term planning and political vision, and interacting with those who give political parties their real power -- the voters and constituents.

Professor McMahon will present his findings to senior political leaders, civil society members, and media at Thursday's presentation.  Ambassador James F. Moriarty will open the program.

Venue: Shanker Hotel, Lazimpat

Date: September 1, 205
