Important Security Information for American Citizens in Nepal
May 21, 2007
This wardens' message is being issued to remind American citizens in Nepal that the Department of State remains concerned about the security situation in Nepal, particularly the ongoing violent acts by the Young Communist League, frequent and sometimes violent demonstrations in Kathmandu, and the instability and violence in the Terai.
The Embassy therefore takes this opportunity to remind American citizens in Nepal to remain vigilant about their personal safety. Moreover, American citizens in Nepal should regularly review their emergency preparedness for any possible eventuality, such as earthquakes, civil disturbances, or pandemics.
Do you have a packed and prepared go bag? This bag should contain important documents for you and your family as well as any needed prescription medications. Remember you need a valid Nepalese visa to exit Nepal.
Do you have stocks of non-perishable food in your home? In many types of emergency situations (to include earthquakes and prolonged civil unrest) you may be required to shelter in place in your home. You should have up to two weeks of food supplies in your home. Remember that in such a situation you may have staff members or guards at your residence that may not be able to leave and stocks in local shops may dwindle, or the shops may be closed.
Do you have supplies of water in your home? You should stock extra potable water for use in an emergency. In a prolonged emergency you may not be able to get refreshed supplies of water or fuel. Know the size of your water tank and how long it usually lasts.
Do you have a first aid kit and any needed medicines? In an emergency situation you may not be able to get out and get necessary supplies. Be prepared ahead of time.
