Important Security Announcement for American Citizens in Nepal
May 28, 2008
With the first sitting of the Constituent Assembly tomorrow and the expectation that the Assembly’s first action will be to declare a republic, the security situation in Kathmandu may become unstable. Specifically, the Government of Nepal has declared 3 areas off-limits for demonstrations: the Convention Center, around the Prime Minister’s residence and around the Palace. As a preventative measure, the U.S. Embassy has decided to close Phora Durbar, which is located across from the Palace, for tomorrow. American citizens are encouraged to exercise caution when moving about town, to avoid the areas mentioned above, and to stay away from demonstrations in other locations, should they occur.
